January Landscape Care in Mason County: Winter Work That Protects Your Property

January in Mason County brings cool temperatures, steady rainfall, and occasional frost. While landscapes slow down, winter is an important time to protect your yard and prepare it for healthy growth in the months ahead.

Caring for Lawns During the Wet Season

Lawns in Mason County typically go dormant in winter. To avoid compaction and damage, limit foot traffic on saturated grass. Clear fallen leaves and debris so moisture doesn’t sit on the turf, which can lead to moss and fungal problems common in our coastal climate.

Dormant Pruning for Trees and Shrubs

January is a good month to prune many deciduous trees and shrubs. With foliage gone, it’s easier to remove dead or damaged branches and shape plants for strong spring growth. Proper pruning now helps prevent disease and improves overall structure.

Mulching and Plant Protection

Heavy winter rain and fluctuating temperatures make mulch especially important in Mason County. Applying mulch helps regulate soil temperature, protect roots, and reduce erosion. Keep mulch a few inches away from trunks and stems to prevent rot.

Watch Drainage During Winter Storms

January storms can reveal drainage challenges. Standing water near foundations or garden beds is a sign that grading or drainage improvements may be needed. Addressing these issues early can prevent bigger problems later in the year.

Supporting Local Wildlife

Winter is a tough season for birds and beneficial insects. Leaving seed heads on select plants, providing bird feeders, and keeping water sources available can support wildlife until spring returns.
